Mother’s Day

May 11th is Mother’s Day. A day that is recognized by all. As I wrote in my previous Mother’s Day blog, Moms will always get the spot light over us Dads. I’m OK with that, so why don’t we make Mom proud by getting her some Flowers or visit our Gifts/Presents category to find her something special.

****

Memorial Day

May 26th is our final event for this month. It’s a time to pay tribute to all our fall troops. It’s Memorial Day. From the time our fore fathers dedicated their lives to make America the land of the free, till present day where our brothers and sisters fall on foreign soil to keep this country free and safe from terrorism and harm. May we have a moment of silence for those heroes past and present.

On the lighter side of Memorial Day, it’s also a time for BBQs and vacations. Speaking of vacations, make sure you also read my soon to be posted blog “Planning My Summer Vacation”. I wanted to have it ready along with this blog but there’s only so much one guy can do. Having been on vacation myself; in England the beginning of April, I know what it’s like to try to book everything without any glitches. I’ll be writing about my vacation along with various travel search engines & attraction sites for various cities. The rest is up to YOU! Happy Travels!

High School Proms & College Graduations

May 18th, 2008

Throughout the month of May is sheer excitement for upcoming high school graduates, not so much for graduation, but for the long awaited prom night. It’s mostly popular for the girls because it’s almost like “Wedding Planning 101“. It’s popular for the guys too because, well you know… ..they get to brag about the girls they never really get. I think this is how those “I caught the biggest fish” or “the fish that got away” stories got started.

The preparation that goes into finding a dress for this one time glamorous event is inconceivable. Here are a couple of shops you can get an eyeball of the latest fashions.

Another scholarly event is graduating from college. The final span of time taking you from your teens into your early twenties; or late twenties for you professional tuition payers, is over. Some students tend to think that student loans are more like a salary than a means to an education. Kudos to all you graduates. And more so, to those of you looking to replace your student loans as income with a real job.

Before we delve into the after life of your college days, lets try to help those of you who still need to tough it out another year or ten. Transitioning into the corporate world after graduating is great but for all the “newbies” and “not yets”, they still need to have some knock around cash for all the keg and toga parties. Here are a couple of sites to offset any deficiencies that your school loan or parents can’t satisfy.

Not Graduating Just Yet?

Now I know this might be something totally new and different but there is a process in place that can help you. First, you’ll need to evaluate what your strengths are. So here are a few places to assess your skill sets and construct your gateway to the corporate world. May Day Is For Maypoles & Green Thumbs

April 22nd, 2008

May 1st, just may be another day to you, but to most of the world it’s May Day. May Day is a public holiday for several countries; and has been celebrated since before the birth of Christ. Due to changes in ancient calendars, May Day wasn’t even in May at one time. Here are some other interesting essentials about May Day that you may like to know, OR NOT.

In Europe, many of the countries may have varied celebrations for this festive occasion. For example, one of the traditions which had evolved in England was the crowning of the Queen of May. The May Queen; also known as the Queen of Spring had parallel similarities to Maia, the Roman Goddess of Springtime.

Another example is the English Maypoles and the French May Tree; “The Tree Of Liberty“. Dancing around a tall wooden pole; often made from Maple, decorated with flowers and colored ribbons is still observed nowadays even here in the US.

What it all boils down to, in a nutshell if you haven’t already figured it out; is that, May Day is a celebration of the coming of spring. It’s the blossoming of flowers, the blooming of trees, the changing of the season. In order to help celebrate this floral occasion, Your Favorite Links is going to help you develop a green thumb, so that you too can appreciate the coming of spring by planning your garden.

Late winter to early spring is the best time to prepare to think about the bright colors of summer in your garden. Just visualize everything from perennials, shrubs, vines, and more. Visit some of our merchants to help plan an entire garden that you’ll enjoy year after year. Some of the sites also offer step by step instructional documentation on how to cultivate your garden. So let’s get growing.

One of the next things that you need to concern yourself with are pests; aside from myself of course. Below are some sites that offer solutions for protecting your garden and home against those creepy, crawly, winged and furry rascals away from your prize possessions. And no, I wasn’t referring to your in-laws, but if the shoe fits… OOPs did I actually type that? Never Mind!

For Pest Control

Diatect - Insect Control Products

Speaking of pests here’s something of interest. If you need some tools to help you keep the yard tidy, try “Steven Colbert: Rat Rakes”; they’re easy to store, you’ll never run out of them and helps to keep unwanted guests from visiting. Or you can try one of these reputable stores that offer these fine products:

>Little Giant Ladders: Type 1A (free shipping & work platform), 480x60

Now that your garden is looking DELICIOUS, you may want to accessorize the yard with statues, bird houses and other ornamental devices. Come to think of it, your yard should already be accessorized if you had read my blog “The Great Outdoors – Part I” earlier this year. If you didn’t then you should check it out because there were some great stores that can really accentuate your outdoors. Here are some of the merchants that weren’t around then. So, by all means, enjoy them now.

Regardless how much you know there’s always something more that you need to know. So on that note here’s a Free Subscription To A Landscaping Magazine for all those know-it-alls, like myself. So be sure to visit our merchants often and you should always check the Special Promos page for discounts and bargains. And if you can’t find any, drop me a line I’ll check to see if there are any for the store you want to shop at. May your thumb always be green, but your wallet even greener still.

The Great Outdoors - Part II

April 7th, 2008

If you recall, you probably ignored my preceding blog about “The Great Outdoors - Part I” which I wrote back in March. Now I’d like to continue on this journey, because I know that some of you aren’t all that homey. You can’t stand the comforts of home. Instead of having a Posture-Pedic mattress under you; you’d prefer to have the earth as your bed. Instead of utilizing your full size kitchen with a 6 chair dining room table with three expandable leaves; you prefer to sit on a rock, by a campfire you just built, while heating some pork & beans right out of the can. And I won’t even dare to mention what you prefer to use over the Charmin. YIKES! Well, for all the rugged outdoorsy men and women out there anxious to invade some barren land, stick around for just a while longer because this one’s for you.

With the warmer weather upon us, it’s normal to want to get out into the wilderness. So Your Favorite Links is proud to share some of the finest stores and merchants who offer the best outdoor equipment, gear and apparel for all your wilderness driven endeavors. You’ll be able to have your run in the wild, with comfort and pleasure, knowing that you’re just as prepared as a boy scout. So whether you’re out to go camping, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, hunting or various water sport activities we’ve got you covered.

There are numerous merchants available that can contribute providing equipment and gear for when you spend your time with Mother Nature. Whether you need to find a trail, an RV park or a campground; we can help you find one. Click here to get a list of the Top Trails in the U.S. Then you can gear up with tents to sleeping bags to backpacks; hiking boots to polarized sunglasses, (can’t give up fashion just because you’re roughing it). Here are a few places to shop from:

Bonding with Mother Nature gets easier once you add a little water into the mix. A babbling brook might be just the thing the soothe your nerves; but maybe you’re nervy enough to go down not such a lazy river for a little white water rafting. Water skiing on the lake is always entertaining. It’s not so entertaining, if you’re the guy or gal who’s looking to make today’s catch a gourmet meal on the campfire. If you’re looking to add a little more water to the mix then you may want to get out of the sticks all together and into the deep blue for some deep sea fishing or boating. What ever your pleasure may be, Your Favorite Links has a store to accommodate you.

A Foolish Look At April Events

March 20th, 2008

April is jam packed full of events, I can hardly keep up with them anymore. Let’s take a look to see if April showers bring in May flowers or June Brides? Make sure you read one of this April’s other blog; Planning A Wedding Day For A June Bride? But for now, read on to learn about Passover, Secretary’s Week, Tax Day and who are we kidding; April Fools Day

****

Erev Pesach (’Eve of Passover’) - First Seder falls on April 19th, 2008; 14 Nissan, 5768 on the Hebrew calendar. For more information about Passover, be sure to read It’s Passover - Let My People Go!

HAPPY PASSOVER

****

For those of you in the corporate world; forgetting this event is like dismissing your spouses birthday or anniversary from memory.

IT’S SECRETARY’S WEEK!

Screw this up and that’s an invitation to be doing your own memos, filings and collating for weeks to come. This will upset productivity, resulting in revenues to plummet with an inevitable faltering decline in the social settings status with your significant other; which means no more executive board room meetings with you know who at you know where. So don’t hold back on the chocolates and flowers for this event. You may even want to spring for lunch or dinner. Should your spouse find any unauthorized trips or hotel stays, you’ll need to worry about what he/she might want to collate.

****

April 15th - Tax Day is a day that we shall all encounter; as we shall also face death; hence the phrase, death and taxes. For helpful websites and services you need to get your taxes done, read this months blog “Have you done your taxes yet?”

****

On the first day of the fourth month is nothing to fool about; actually it is. April Fools Day is a time for pranks & jokes to those unsuspecting victims. Have you been victimized lately? Although April Fools Day is not a holiday per se, it is recognized by many countries across the globe and observed on April 1st. There are many different claims to its origins, but one thing is common; and that would be all the embarrassing pranks pulled. So whether you’re the bug or the windshield, may you have a bamboozling April Fools Day.

Planning A Wedding Day For A June Bride?

March 20th, 2008

Something Old, Something New,
Something Borrowed, Something Blue

It’s every girls dream to be dressed in white and to walk down an aisle longer than the Great Wall Of China. While being escorted down that long and winding road, some women peering with envy as everyone else gazes with joy. Her veil that cascades down to her shoulders as her train shadows her with every step. At the end of the aisle, her soon to be husband anxiously awaits to lead her to the alter, to exchange their precious vows.

Since I’ve been a photographer/videographer for over 20 years; I’ve seen the pride of 100’s of brides; walked down miles of aisles and been to more receptions than Vince Vaughn & Owen Wilson combined.

I’m long since retired now but one thing always stays the same and that’s the fact that every woman wants to be a June Bride. They plan all their lives to make that “One Special Day” a moment in time taken from heaven. From planning intricate details from the menu, down to the place card settings.

So down to the littlest detail, everything must be PERFECT! That’s why Your Favorite Links has gone to extreme measures to bring you all types of merchants providing everything from bridal party and wedding gowns, tuxedos for the groomsmen; shoes, gloves, bags, veils and bonnets, Oh MY! Now that everyone is garbed to the nines, we need to get hold that date cards, place cards, invitations, scrolls for the menu to be printed on and let’s not forget thank you cards, favors and gifts for the bridal party too?

It’s a good thing I wrote all this down, because I’m liable to forget something; like buying a bouquet of red roses for the bride to be. You wouldn’t want to do that. You shouldn’t forget about bestowing your loved one with some other token of your undying affections. (Could that be why my significant other found another significant other? DOH!) I’m not saying that could ever possibly ever happen to you. Are there any guys reading this?

One of the longest lasting memoirs of this eventful day will be the wedding bands; which can now be inscribed with your matrimonial vows, favorite biblical verse or names and numbers from your little black book. Just kidding girls, let’s be real; the only guy that would possibly be reading this blog will most likely either be a geek or gay.

Having spent all your life planning for that one special day, make sure you capture as many candid moments as you can. One way is by visiting some of our merchants who sell disposable cameras which you can scatter on the tables. You guests will be snapping away like the paparazzi lined along the banks of the red carpet leading into the Oscar ceremonies.

Bearing all this in mind, Your Favorite Links needed to devote some special attention to all of these Brides To Be. So what we’ve done is upgraded our Weddings sub-category to a category all of its own. By doing this and adding more than a dozen related websites (see the April 2008 Newsletter); we’ve helped to organize and make it easy to find any and all wedding related items that you can think of. And even some you may not have thought of.

Here is the list of sub-categories that you will find under the Weddings category at YourFavoriteLinks.com.

Some other categories you’d like to explore is Travel to book your honeymoon and Home/Garden to start building your love nest.

So even if you don’t intend to purchase anything online, it’s just a great way to be able to window shop all wedding related items from the comfort of your own home.

Have A Wonderful Wedding Day and
YES, YOU ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BRIDE I EVER SAW

It’s Passover - Let My People Go!

March 20th, 2008

Easter evaded us this year because of a solar/lunar issue. You’ll have to read last month’s blog March Madness @ Your Favorite Links to find out the details on that. But Passover is here for us to still celebrate and blog about for the month of April. To bring you all up to date on the origination of Passover, you can watch “The Ten Commandments”; a 220 minute Oscar award winning major motion picture with Charlton Heston & Yul Brynner or read a few brief yet informative lines about this historic event, which plagued a nation.

  • Enslavement of Jews - The children of what is now known as Israel come to Egypt, only to be enslaved by the Pharaoh in hopes to try to regulate the ever increasing numbers of these wanderers. Despite enslaving them, forcing them to erect cities and other monumental structures the Jews still had the energy left to propagate. The Pharaoh desperately looking to keep the population in check, ordered to have all the Jewish newborn males killed. A young Moses eluded this fate, by having been placed into the Nile and was later found by none other but the Pharaoh’s daughter.
  • Moses is Appointed Leader - Over time, Moses learns of his origins & is called upon by GOD to demand the release of his brethren from the Pharaoh himself. The stubborn Pharaoh refuses the “Let My People Go” plea from Moses.
  • The Ten Plagues - The Pharaoh was not impressed by Moses association with GOD & continued to dismiss him. GOD WILL NOT BE DISMISSED! It was not before long, that Egypt was plagued by the wrath of GOD. It wasn’t until the 10th plague that which cost the lives of all newborns, including the Pharaohs’ son where he conceded and allowed the Jews to be free. By the instruction given by Moses, lambs were sacrificed, and the blood of the lamb was used to paint the doorways of all the Jewish newborns. This was a means of how the plague could identify and “PASSOVER” the homes without inflicting any harm to the inhabitants.
  • Exodus - Before the Pharaoh had a change of heart; (which he later did), demanded that Moses leave Egypt with his people. In this haste, they left with their unleavened bread to start a tradition which has been observed ever since. This is why matzah is the main staple during every Passover celebration.

HAPPY PASSOVER

Have you done your taxes yet?

March 2nd, 2008

They say that there are two things in life that you can’t avoid. Death & Taxes. Somehow, at times, I find death is so much more appealing. Don’t you?

For some reason, I can never bring myself to find the little paper bag with all my crumbled, illegible receipts; to begin tallying up the miniscule write offs that I may have possibly earned. Just shoot me now; I’m sure it’ll be much painless. And yet, it must be done.

I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling the way I do. There must be plenty of you out there with your little paper bags and shoe boxes. So what does one do? Well, keep reading. We shouldn’t have to hang ourselves yet.

At Your Favorite Links, we not only try to have an abundant amount of websites for you to choose from, but we also try to resolve any uncertainties or dilemmas that you may have. So if your paper bag or shoebox of wrinkled receipts is keeping you from getting your taxes done, then we can help.

In our travels, we have found a website that can help sort things out. They’re called Shoeboxed. This is what they do:

Organize Receipts
You can organize traditional paper receipts along with your email receipts in your secure Shoeboxed account. Tabular and statistical overviews give you detailed information about your spending, and can break down your purchases into the specific items listed on your receipts.
Receipt Mail-In: They’ll Scan Your Receipts
Cut down on the time you spend scanning receipts, with Receipt Mail-In. You just send us a Shoeboxed envelope full of receipts, we scan them in, upload them to your account, and mail them back to you. You’ll finally be able to keep track of those receipts, generate expense reports, and capitalize on tax rebates. It’s only $9.95 for the first month.
Email Address For Online Shopping
Sign up for Shoeboxed and never give your personal email address to online stores again! With our “1-Click Unsubscribe” feature, you can easily manage what emails you want to see, and which ones you don’t. Email was meant to be a safe, fast, and private form of communication, and Shoeboxed helps you keep it that way.

Now that you’ve got all your receipts in order, you can proceed to file your taxes & wait to collect that big tax check, so you can spend it frivolously. Did I mention that Your Favorite Links is an Online Shopping Mall? Until then, here are some of the few sites on YFL that offer tax services:

File Your Taxes Here
TurboTax - Do your taxes for Free Free Online Tax preparation Software / E-File
FreeTaxUSA.com Button More
Tax Services

By the way, just because I used a “YELLOW” background in parts of this blog doesn’t mean that you’re “ASCARED” of filing your taxes. If you are, I’m sure there are support groups for that. If not, we can start one.

So, isn’t good to know that you don’t need to hang yourself just because you hate doing your taxes. I hope that you’ve found this information helpful. Be sure to pass it on & read some of my other blogs. (There’s no extra charge.)

March Madness @ Your Favorite Links

February 18th, 2008

We’re all familiar with March Madness even if we don’t follow basketball. It’s the elimination process of 65 college basketball teams that funnel down to what is known as the Sweet 16, leading to the Elite Eight to eventually the Final Four. The selection of these teams will be held on March 16th, where these teams will be charted against one another in what is know as “The Bracket”. Basically, it’s an inverted family tree turned on it’s side. If you’re into the sports scene you already know this; but I’m providing the visuals for the non-sports fanatic.

On March 20th the competition begins but then again, so do the eliminations; as each team faces one another in hopes to reach the Final Four playoffs until the final 2008 NCAA Men’s Championship Game on Monday, April 7, at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

During the course of this dribbling battle is where the madness begins. College students congregate in bars just like the Romans did in the Coliseum during the gladiator events. Beer is chugged and shots are downed with every swish through the hoop, as the intensity builds. The only sound louder than the roar of the spectators will be the echoing hangovers of the next day. At the end of the night, one team falls as the other team makes its mark deeper in the bracket to be cheered for yet again another day.

So regardless of which team you’re hoping to see become the victor, you will probably want to be seen in the proper attire. Here are a few places that can help to support your favorite team.

Memorabilia

Well that’s March Madness for you. But the title of this blog is “March Madness @ Your Favorite Links”. So that means I’ll need to discuss a few of the other events happening here that may cause some degree of madness in one way shape or form.

March has several different things that we can all appreciate. This year we have Easter making an early appearance on March 23rd. It usually comes in April. I’ll tell you why it came early if you stick around a bit longer. Till then let me list a few other events occurring in March

Spring will arrive on March 20th this year. Be sure to read my blog The Great Outdoors - Part I on how to spruce up the exterior of your home with some specialty stores found at Your Favorite Links.

On March 17th everyone will go green for this maddening event. And I’m not referring to being ecologically correct either.

Let’s begin by taking a stab at this March event that everyone knows, but doesn’t quite get the recognition that Historians or Shakespearians may bequeath to it. “Beware the Ides of March”. The “ides” was a term used in that day to indicate the 15th of March, May, July, and October; the 13th in the other months. On March 15th 44 BC Julius Caesar met his fate. A fate which was forecasted to him; but he did not heed the words of the soothsayer. Would Caesar have listened to Michael Corleone who said; “keep your friends close, but your enemies closer,”? Probably not. If not for this infamous day on the ides of March, we would not know of the Roman Emperors alleged last words “et tu, Brute?” Referring to Marcus Junius Brutus, a senator and close friend of Caesar. Brutus had masterminded the brutal assassination of his close friend and emperor. Now if you think that was colorful, don’t miss out on this next event.

You will be “green with envy” for this celebrated day in March, which is “St Patrick’s Day“. St Patrick was one of the patron saints of Ireland who was believed to have died on March 17th in 461 AD. Being a national holiday in many parts of Ireland; St Paddy’s Day is not just celebrated by just the Irish. Everyone wants to be Irish on St Paddy’s Day. Everywhere you look you’ll see green; even the beer is green. So don’t forget your four leaf clovers and to be on the lookout for any leprechauns. Their pot of gold might be hiding at the end of a rainbow.

Easter is one of the holiest days of the year, as observed by the Roman Catholic Church. (Not to mention all the Easter Bunnies who should not be confused with Playboy Bunnies.) It comes to us early this year (March 23rd), which leaves many of us wondering why? Fortunately, for your burning curiosities, I know why. Normally Easter is celebrated in April, as is Passover, (April 20). The discrepancy occurs because the two holidays are forecasted from two different calendars. Easter is determined by a solar calendar & is observed on the first Sunday after the full moon on or after March 21. Whereas, Passover is based solely on the Hebrew lunar calendar. Now that I’ve extinguished your burning curiosity, make sure you check for sales & bargains by visiting Your Favorite Links Special Promos page to get your bonnet and other fine attire, so that you can walk down 5th Avenue in the Macy’s parade.

The Great Outdoors – Part I

February 18th, 2008

Spring is when we finally revisit the openness of the Great Outdoors. The feeling of the warmth of the sun beat down upon us as the gentle breeze from the South exhilaratingly brushes against our faces. No longer being cooped up in our homes, we look to co-habitat with nature on two levels; locally outside the perimeters of our own homes and out in the wilderness of Mother Natures backyard.

In Part I of this two part series, we will take a look at our own backyards. Part II will explore the Great Outdoors in the wild.

With the nicer weather, we look forward to spending more time outdoors. Most of the times, it’ll be in our own backyards. So what are some of the things that people do to make the outside of their homes as cozy and quaint as the inside of the house?

At Your Favorite Links, we’d like to help you acquire the items you are focusing on with these exceptional stores that target niche products for the exterior of your home. We’ll canvas your exterior with some breathtaking embellishments.

First off would be to enhance the beautification of your garden. Flowers and shrubbery is the best way to spruce up the grounds. You can accentuate your garden by strategically placing some of these attractions throughout the exterior; benches, gargoyles, statues, bird baths, fountains & sundials.

Now that you’ve beautified some of the area, lets see about working on some projects so that you can better utilize your space outdoors. Let’s say you’ve done something crazy like build a pond off in the corner of your yard. How great would it be to have a Bridge that spans from one side to the other. Now you may want to consider putting up a Carport so you can protect your car from the glare of the soon to come summer sun. It’ll make waxing the car a breeze. On that thought, being out back you may want to help shade the area, so some Umbrellas or Canopies may be in order. When the sun goes down, you’ll need some light & heat. Torches & Firepits can do the trick there. And what about building a Home Sweet Home for Rover. These set of stores can help you with the above.

Now that all the projects are out of the way let’s party! Let’s find a few things to help entertain the masses in a gameful & athletic way. Volley Ball will help to work up a sweat. If you have enough room in the yard you may want a set of Soccer Goals. Now if you want to get bad, get Badminton. If those games were too fast paced let’s slow it down a notch with Croquet. And one of my personal favorites Bocce Ball.

I bet after all that project work & fun & games, you’re looking to rest & relax. So lets kick up our feet & get comfy. One of the things you may want to get is a Adirondack Chairs. Another classic outdoor chair is the Rocker; great for the front porch. For something in the backyard let’s think of bringing two trees together. Something like a Hammock. Let’s not forget something for the kids like Swing Sets. And for the grown ups a Tiki Bar should be in order.
